The Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ASELGON) has described the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as a patriotic and pragmatic leader who made lasting contributions to Nigeria’s political history.

In a condolence statement signed by its national president, Albert Asipa, ASELGON also mourned the passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona. The two prominent figures died on the same day, which the association described as “a terrible and devastating blow” to the country.

Asipa noted that President Buhari would be remembered for his disciplined and focused leadership, having served Nigeria both as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a civilian President between 2015 and 2023.

“He gave his all for the progress, upliftment, and betterment of Nigeria,” Asipa said. “Buhari will long be remembered for his pragmatism, loyalty to nation-building, and commitment to noble leadership.”

On the passing of Oba Adetona, the association described him as “a quintessential monarch” known for his honesty, discipline, and deep cultural knowledge. “His frankness and bluntness had no equal,” the statement read. “He will be greatly missed by the Yoruba nation, the people of Ijebu-Ode, and the country at large.”
