A former member of the House of Representatives, Dachung Bagos, has said that several appointees under the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari betrayed his trust and worsened corruption in the country.

Bagos made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, shortly after Buhari was buried in Daura, Katsina State.

He said although Buhari was known for his integrity and commitment to fighting corruption, the people he trusted with power failed him.

“Looking at the president as an individual, he tried to select people whom he believed would help him run his government,” Bagos said. “But in the end, some of those people are now being investigated for corruption.”

Bagos noted that Buhari’s failure to effectively monitor and evaluate his appointees weakened his anti-corruption agenda. He also said that while many Nigerians respected Buhari as a man of integrity, growing insecurity and corruption during his tenure overshadowed his achievements.

The comments come as the nation continues to reflect on the legacy of the former president, who served both as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023. Several former officials from Buhari’s administration are currently under investigation for corruption and financial misconduct.
