President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri in honour of his late predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made during a session of tributes by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held in honour of the former president, who recently passed away.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a brief statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.

“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as MUHAMMADU Buhari University. President Tinubu announced the honour at the session of tributes of the Federal Executive Council to his late predecessor,” Onanuga wrote.

The decision comes as part of the national tributes being paid to the former president, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023. Buhari, a native of Katsina State, had strong ties to the North-East region, especially in the fight against insurgency, where Maiduguri played a key role.
