The Ghanaian government has responded to a viral video showing Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, known by some as the Igbo King in Ghana—suggesting plans to establish an Igbo kingdom in the country. The video, which resurfaced online recently, has stirred public concern and diplomatic discussions.

In an official statement on Thursday, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, confirmed that he personally invited Ihenetu for a meeting to clarify the matter.

According to the minister, Ihenetu explained that the video in question was taken from a 2013 interview and that he deeply regrets the statements made during that time. He emphasized that he has since abandoned the idea and has not bought any land for such a purpose.

“Ihenetu expressed sincere apologies to the President, Government, Chiefs, and People of Ghana for the confusion and agitation the old video has caused,” Ablakwa said.

The minister reiterated Ghana’s proud record of peaceful coexistence and its commitment to Pan-African values, but warned that divisive or unlawful conduct would not be tolerated.

“While we remain hospitable, we expect all guests to respect our laws and traditions,” he added.

Ghana also used the opportunity to reaffirm its strong diplomatic ties with Nigeria and urged both citizens and the media to avoid statements that could inflame tensions or lead to xenophobia.

Ihenetu, a Nigerian businessman and cultural figure, has lived in Ghana for several years and was previously recognized by some Igbo communities in the diaspora. However, his past statements about forming a kingdom sparked controversy, leading to the Ghanaian government’s swift response to douse tensions.

The Foreign Minister called for calm and understanding on all sides, emphasizing the long-standing friendship and unity between Ghanaians and Nigerians.
