Aisha Yesufu Backs Senator Natasha’s Return, Dares Senate

Prominent activist, Aisha Yesufu, has declared her full support for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s planned return to the Senate on Tuesday, warning the Senate against defying a court order that declared her suspension unconstitutional.

Yesufu made her stance clear on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s *Sunrise Daily*. She said she would personally accompany Akpoti-Uduaghan to the National Assembly in a show of solidarity.

“Senator Natasha has every right to resume office,” Yesufu said. “And by tomorrow, she is not going to resume alone. There are people who are going with her, and I’ll be one of them. If the Senate decides to kill us, let them.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has insisted on returning to her seat despite an appeal filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio challenging the ruling of the Federal High Court which declared her suspension unlawful.

Yesufu condemned what she described as systemic discrimination against women in politics, noting that out of 109 senators, only four are women — yet one of them is being unjustly targeted.

She stressed that the court had already ruled in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s favour and that the Senate lacked the power to suspend an elected senator in defiance of such a judgement.

“The Senate didn’t make Natasha a senator,  her people did,” she said. “You can’t deny them their representation. The suspension was unconstitutional and illegal from the start.”

Yesufu also accused the Senate of disobeying court orders and criticised the judiciary for bowing to political influence.

“The Senate is showing that it can act with impunity. And the judiciary, which used to be the last hope of the common man, now seems to follow political body language,” she added.

The development comes amid rising public concern over the treatment of women in Nigerian politics and growing calls for respect for the rule of law.
