Enugu Slashes Band A Electricity Tariff From ₦209 to ₦160/kWh

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs for Band A customers, dropping the rate from ₦209 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to ₦160/kWh. The new tariff takes effect from August 1, 2025.

This was contained in the Commission’s Order No. EERC/2025/003, issued over the weekend to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the company now handling electricity supply in the state after replacing Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

Speaking on the development, EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, explained that the tariff review was based on the 2023 Enugu State Electricity Law, which allows the state to regulate its own electricity market. The law followed the constitutional amendment and Electricity Act 2023 that gave states full control over power regulation within their borders.

According to Okonkwo, the Commission used its 2024 Tariff Methodology Regulations and data from MainPower to arrive at a more cost-reflective rate. He noted that the average cost of delivering electricity in Enugu State was around ₦94, made possible due to continued federal subsidy on electricity generation.

“We reduced Band A to ₦160 to help MainPower avoid revenue shock. The other tariff bands — B, C, D, and E — remain unchanged for now,” he said.

He, however, warned that the ₦160 rate could go up if the Federal Government withdraws its generation subsidy, which currently covers a large part of the electricity cost.

To ensure accountability, EERC has mandated MainPower to publish daily updates on the average power supply per feeder for Band A customers. If service falls short for seven straight days, such feeders will be downgraded and reclassified.

The Commission assured residents of its commitment to protecting consumers and encouraging efficient service delivery, stating that the new structure marks a win for electricity reforms in Enugu State.
