The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has promised to meet with retired police officers who protested in Abuja on Monday over poor retirement benefits and welfare.
The assurance was conveyed through the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, following a protest led by the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, and other activists.
The retired officers are demanding better treatment for both serving and former members of the Nigeria Police Force, many of whom say they have been neglected after years of service.
In a statement posted on the official X handle of the Nigeria Police Force, the FCT Commissioner was said to have met with the protesting officers and assured them of ongoing efforts to address their concerns.
The statement also revealed that arrangements have been made for the IGP to personally engage the retirees at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters in Abuja.
However, the police cautioned that some individuals tried to hijack the protest for other motives, but said the situation was brought under control.
The meeting is expected to be part of broader efforts to resolve long-standing complaints about poor police pensions and post-service hardship faced by many retired officers.
