Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has suspended 87 government officials for failing to attend a major state function.
The governor announced the suspension on Monday night through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor.
According to the statement, the affected officials include commissioners, senior special assistants, special assistants, and permanent secretaries. They are to proceed on a one-month working suspension without pay.
“The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has directed that the underlisted government functionaries proceed on a one-month working suspension without salary for failure to attend an important government function,” the statement said.
Though the nature of the function was not specified, the governor’s action has sent a strong message about discipline and commitment among political appointees.
Since taking office in May 2023, Governor Nwifuru has stressed accountability and attendance at government activities as key to his administration’s performance standards.
The suspension is expected to serve as a warning to other officials to take government duties more seriously going forward.
