The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has advised Nigerians to strictly follow the rules attached to their United States (U.S.) visas, warning that any misuse could lead to serious consequences, including visa revocation or travel bans.
The warning was issued in a statement released on Tuesday by NCS spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, following concerns raised by U.S. authorities about some Nigerians using their visas for purposes different from what was declared during application.
The Customs Service reminded the public that U.S. visa holders are subject to continuous monitoring even after they enter the country, and any violation of immigration rules, customs regulations, or U.S. laws could result in penalties.
“Nigerians travelling to the U.S. must not engage in activities inconsistent with their visa type,” the statement read. “Applicants must understand that vetting does not stop at the point of entry.”
The NCS also urged travellers to declare any cash above \$10,000 or its equivalent at departure or arrival points, and to avoid carrying prohibited items in their baggage.
Passengers were advised to be law-abiding both within Nigeria and abroad. The statement stressed that anyone found guilty of fraud or misconduct would face prosecution under both Nigerian and U.S. laws.
The NCS added that it is working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to help Nigeria avoid being added to a broader visa restriction list, which could block entry for genuine travellers and businesspeople.
