The Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has pledged to end the imposition of candidates and ensure internal democracy as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Mark promised to reform the party’s internal structure and promote fairness, transparency, and accountability in its operations.
“I assure you that under my leadership, we shall be committed to full democratic practices and principles that abhor imposition and special privileges,” Mark said. “Internal democracy, transparency, and accountability will be our mantra.”
His remarks appear to be a subtle response to concerns raised earlier by former APC chieftain, Salihu Lukman. In a public statement titled ‘ADC and the Prospect of Internal Democracy’, Lukman had warned the party against the rise of godfatherism and urged the interim leadership to avoid favoritism.
Mark reassured party members that his leadership would be fair and people-oriented.
“We will be fair and just to all party members. We promise to be totally transparent. ADC will have zero tolerance for anti-party activities and other forms of indiscipline,” he added.
The ADC, though not among Nigeria’s top two political parties, has positioned itself as a potential alternative force in the country’s growing multi-party democracy. As preparations for 2027 begin, the party’s commitment to internal reforms may shape its relevance in the coming elections.
