Two farmers were shot dead on Monday by suspected bandits in Ayama village, Balle District of Sokoto State. The attackers, believed to be members of the feared Lakurawa gang, opened fire on the victims while they worked on their farmland.
The attack happened around 4:30 p.m. on July 29. According to eyewitnesses, the bandits stormed the village on motorcycles and used sophisticated weapons to carry out the killings. The victims were identified as 30-year-old Tukur Muhammed and Sa’ad Muhammed.
Troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA responded quickly to the attack and exchanged gunfire with the criminals. However, the bandits managed to escape through the porous border into neighbouring Niger Republic.
The remains of the two farmers were taken to the hospital for proper documentation before burial.
Security forces have since increased patrols in the area to prevent further attacks and reassure local residents of their safety.
The Lakurawa gang has been linked to multiple violent attacks in the region, often targeting rural communities near the Nigeria-Niger border. Residents have continued to call on the government for stronger border control and lasting security solutions.
