The Federal Government has urged the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) to suspend their ongoing seven-day warning strike and return to the negotiation table.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, made the appeal on Wednesday, saying that strike action was not the best way to resolve industrial disputes. He stressed the need for continued dialogue to address the nurses’ concerns.
The appeal was contained in a statement released by the ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Patience Onuoha.
According to the statement, the minister met with leaders of the association on Tuesday as part of efforts to prevent the strike. Discussions are expected to continue on Friday at the Federal Ministry of Health.
Despite the government’s plea, nurses across federal health institutions began a seven-day warning strike on Wednesday, demanding better pay, fair allowances, and improved working conditions.
The strike has already begun to affect operations in some public hospitals nationwide.
