Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has taken legal action against Reno Omokri, a strong supporter of President Bola Tinubu, over alleged defamatory statements made against him and the IPOB movement.
According to a writ of summons filed at the Enugu High Court, Kanu is demanding N60 billion in compensation for what he described as false and damaging publications. The suit was confirmed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, who described it as a “muscular legal action.”
Kanu is asking for **N50 billion** in general damages for defamation, emotional distress, and damage to his reputation, and another **N10 billion** in aggravated damages for what he calls malicious and reckless statements.
He is also requesting the court to order Omokri to:
-Retract the statements in two national newspapers and on his social media page (Twitter/X),
-Issue a public apology in the same platforms,
-Stop making further defamatory statements, and
-Pay the legal costs and interest on the awarded sum.
Ejimakor, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), said the lawsuit serves as a warning to others making defamatory remarks against Kanu, IPOB, or the Igbo people.
Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, is yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit as of the time of this report.
Kanu, currently in custody and facing trial in Nigeria over charges related to his separatist activism, continues to attract public attention and legal controversies surrounding his movement and detention.
