Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has said he never commissioned any project or allowed his name to be put on public facilities while in office.
Obi spoke in a viral video addressing the recent renaming of the popular Charly Boy Bus Stop in Lagos to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop by the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA). The move sparked outrage across Nigeria with many calling for the name to be reverted.
During an interaction with Charly Boy, Obi said renaming streets or facilities was “totally irrelevant,” especially when millions of Nigerians struggle to meet basic needs.
He explained that while governor, he refused to name streets, buildings, or any public facility after himself, even when urged to do so. Obi said, “I didn’t even commission anything. Whatever I did was with public money, so I didn’t see the relevance of putting my name on them.”
He added that if elected President, he would maintain the same principle, focusing on functionality rather than personal recognition.
Obi’s remarks have added fuel to the ongoing debate about naming public places after political figures in Nigeria.
