Popular Nigerian singer Alexander Adegbola Akande, known as 9ice, has shared his harrowing experience with a “spiritual attack” that left him vomiting blood for six months. The ordeal, which began around 2009/2010, nearly cost him his life.
In a recent interview on The Nancy Isime Show, 9ice revealed that despite medical tests, his condition had no clear medical cause. It was only after someone referred him to an Ifa priest—a traditional African spiritual healer—that he found relief.
“I’m not a Christian or a Muslim, I’m a Babalawo. I’m an African. I’m a traditionalist,” 9ice said, explaining that he regrets not embracing traditional beliefs earlier in life. He also mentioned that legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, who faced criticism for his traditionalist beliefs, is now better understood.
When asked about spiritual battles in his music career, 9ice admitted he has faced many, but the six-month illness was the most severe. The singer urged Africans to embrace their traditional religions rather than blindly following Christianity or Islam.
His story sheds light on the deep spiritual beliefs and struggles that influence many Nigerians beyond their public lives.
