The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised the Federal Government’s plan to spend over ₦712 billion on the renovation of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, calling the project “wasteful” and “insensitive.”
In a statement released on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the planned airport upgrade reflects a clear disconnect between the government and the hardship Nigerians are currently facing.
“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) strongly rejects the shocking ₦712 billion airport renovation plan announced by the Tinubu government,” the statement read. “It is another example of careless spending and lack of concern for the people.”
The party argued that spending such a huge amount on an already modernised airport is unjustifiable when basic needs like education, healthcare, and food remain out of reach for many citizens.
According to the ADC, what Nigeria’s aviation sector truly needs is not another “gold-plated terminal” but proper maintenance of existing infrastructure and development of regional airports to boost local connectivity and economic growth.
The ADC called on the government to prioritise the real needs of Nigerians instead of investing in projects that benefit only a small portion of the population.
The planned airport renovation is part of a broader infrastructure push by the Tinubu administration, but it is already drawing criticism in light of the country’s ongoing economic challenges, including high inflation, fuel price hikes, and widespread poverty.
