Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has revealed that Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has consistently maintained that he would serve only one term if elected President.
Yesufu made this known in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, where she quote-tweeted Obi’s recent statement reaffirming his commitment to a single-term presidency.
According to her, Obi has always used Nelson Mandela’s leadership as a model, saying that if a leader is truly focused and efficient, four years is enough to make an impact.
“I can confirm that Mr. Peter Gregory Obi has always said he would do just a term even before the 2023 election,” she wrote.
Yesufu, who was a strong supporter of Obi during the 2023 campaign, said she had challenged his one-term stance several times, arguing that Nigeria’s problems may require more time to fix. However, she said Obi never shifted his position.
She also noted that some people in the northern region had raised concerns that electing Obi might mean extending southern leadership by another four years. Nigeria’s political balance often considers regional power rotation between the North and South, making this a sensitive issue ahead of future elections.
“Many from the North had shown concern that supporting Peter Obi might lead to an extra four years for the South,” Yesufu explained.
She added that she sought Obi’s reconfirmation earlier this year before publicly speaking on the matter, and he again assured her of his one-term pledge.
Obi’s reaffirmation comes amid growing public interest in his political future as the country looks ahead to the 2027 general elections. His single-term promise could be a key point in gaining wider national support, especially from regions concerned about power rotation and political fairness.
