There is growing concern over the safety of Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, after reports emerged that a team of police officers broke his right hand while in detention.
Sowore, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the African Action Congress (AAC), was reportedly injured early Thursday morning while being held at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) facility in Abuja.
According to a statement shared on his official Instagram page, the incident happened around 6AM when officers from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit stormed his detention cell.
The post alleged that the team, led by a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), forcibly entered his cell, assaulted him, broke his right hand, and moved him to an unknown location.
Sowore was said to have been detained on Wednesday after he honoured an invitation from the IGP Monitoring Unit. The reason for the invitation and his detention has not been officially confirmed by the police.
At the time of filing this report, there has been no response from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the alleged assault.
This incident has sparked public outrage, with supporters demanding accountability and calling for his immediate release.
