Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has made bold promises ahead of the 2027 presidential election, vowing to tackle corruption and push for constitutional reform within his first month in office if elected President.
Speaking during an X (formerly Twitter) Space titled Weekend Politics on Friday, Amaechi said he would resign from office if he fails to end corruption within one month as President.
“If I do not end corruption in Nigeria within one month, I will tender my resignation,” he declared.
Amaechi also promised to amend the Nigerian constitution by replacing the concept of “indigeneship” with “citizenship,” which he believes would promote unity and equality among Nigerians.
On the issue of fuel subsidy, Amaechi said he would not reverse the removal if elected. Instead, he pledged to ensure that the funds saved from the subsidy go directly into the pockets of ordinary Nigerians and not the elites.
He also criticized powerful individuals in the country, accusing them of frequently looting money from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
“It enrages me that those very influential among the ruling class visit CBN often to steal money,” he said, adding that Nigeria’s security and economy would have improved if such money had been properly used.
Amaechi did not hold back his criticism of the current leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the “worst INEC chairman in Nigeria’s history.”
He further took a swipe at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, challenging him to walk freely through the streets of Port Harcourt to see who the people truly love.
Amaechi, a key figure in Nigerian politics and a two-time director-general of President Buhari’s campaign, is widely believed to be considering a run for the presidency in 2027.
