The Lagos State Government has ordered all e-hailing operators to present their vehicles for compulsory inspection, as part of new efforts to boost safety, improve service delivery, and enforce proper regulation in the transport sector.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made the announcement during a meeting with representatives of licensed e-hailing companies in Ikeja. He raised concerns over the poor condition of some vehicles being used on popular platforms, warning that any car found unfit will be immediately removed from operation.

“We have seen rising safety risks and a drop in service standards. This is not acceptable. We will not take chances with the safety of lives and property,” Osiyemi stated.

The commissioner also criticised many e-hailing platforms for their weak data management systems, which he said make it harder for the government to monitor operations or track down crimes linked to transport services.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, supported the move, saying unregistered vehicles will no longer be tolerated due to the security risks they pose. He also stressed the need for all drivers to register with the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) and warned that repeat offenders could face licence suspension.

He advised passengers to avoid booking rides outside official e-hailing apps, noting that doing so bypasses built-in safety tools like panic buttons and driver verification features.

At the session, major e-hailing companies including Uber, Bolt, Lagride, InDrive, EDryv, and others—shared updates on new safety features, such as mandatory licence checks, stricter onboarding rules, and panic alert systems.

The Lagos State Government says enforcement of the new inspection rule will begin immediately, and operators who fail to comply will face strict penalties.
