At least three people have been confirmed dead, with many others injured, after suspected Fulani militia launched a deadly attack on Gwon-Rim village in Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, early Wednesday morning.
According to eyewitnesses, over 50 armed men stormed the village at dawn, shooting wildly, burning houses and vehicles, and looting shops and food barns. Livestock were also reportedly stolen, while terrified villagers fled into nearby bushes for safety.
Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in the attack, adding to the long list of violent incidents that have plagued Plateau communities in recent years.
The Chairman of Riyom LGA, Hon. Sati Bature Shuwa, confirmed the attack during a visit to the affected village for an on-the-spot assessment. He described the incident as “uncalled for, unprovoked, and unacceptable.”
“I have instructed security agencies to track down the attackers and ensure they face justice,” he said, urging residents to remain calm.
The chairman also visited victims receiving treatment at a nearby hospital and reassured the community of his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
This latest attack adds to growing concerns about the recurring violence in Plateau State, especially in rural areas where farmers and herders often clash, sometimes resulting in deadly raids.
