The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a pastor, Ifediorah Onyeibor Joseph, for allegedly flogging 20 children during a so-called “spiritual cleansing” program in his church.
The arrest followed a viral video showing the children many of them minors being beaten inside a church building during a three-day event organized by the pastor.
In a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest and said the police acted after the disturbing footage sparked public outrage online.
“The pastor claimed he was led by the Holy Spirit to conduct the cleansing on the innocent children,” she stated.
SP Iringe-Koko added that operatives of the command moved swiftly and arrested the pastor and several church members at the scene. All 20 children were rescued.
“A thorough investigation is ongoing to uncover the full details of what happened,” she said, promising that more updates will be provided soon.
The incident has raised concerns about child abuse in religious settings and sparked calls for stricter regulations around church activities involving minors.
While the investigation continues, child rights activists are urging authorities to ensure justice for the victims and proper mental and medical support for the affected children.
