The National Chairman of a faction of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has criticised the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, calling him an “Uber politician” over his recent political moves.
In a statement he personally signed on Friday, Abure accused Obi of lacking political consistency and trying to work with multiple parties at once to advance his ambition to become Nigeria’s president.
“It is unfortunate that Obi has turned himself into an irony and a paradox in the Nigerian political space. He has become an ‘Uber politician,’ not willing to take a position and stand by it,” Abure said.
The criticism followed Obi’s directive to his supporters to vote for candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the by-elections scheduled for August 16 across several states.
Abure said Obi’s actions show desperation and described him as someone who has “booked a place in the Guinness Book of Records” for allegedly affiliating with multiple political parties at once.
The internal conflict between Obi and Abure’s faction highlights ongoing divisions within the Labour Party since the 2023 general elections, where Obi emerged as a major challenger but lost to President Bola Tinubu. The party has been plagued by leadership disputes and internal disagreements over control and strategy.
