Angry youths in Ayede Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, took to the streets on Friday to protest rising insecurity in their community.
The protesters blocked the busy Benin–Akure–Ilesa highway, causing major traffic gridlock and leaving travellers stranded for several hours.
The protest followed Thursday’s attack by suspected kidnappers, who shot dead a 34-year-old man, Okudili Okoro, and abducted a popular businesswoman, Mrs Orogun, in Ogbese.
The youths accused the government and security agencies of failing to protect lives and property, saying they are now living in fear.
One protester said, “We are tired of these attacks. People are being killed and kidnapped, and the government is not doing enough.”
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police later addressed the protesters, assuring them that the police have begun efforts to arrest the suspects and rescue the kidnapped woman.
The incident has added to growing concerns about the rising wave of insecurity across the state and the South-West region.
