Six Kidnappers Killed in Police Raid on Abia-Akwa Ibom Border

In a major breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping in the South-East and South-South regions, the Abia State Police Command has confirmed the killing of six suspected kidnappers during a raid on a criminal hideout located in Ikot Ukpon village, Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The operation, which was carried out based on credible intelligence, was led by officers under the command of the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa. According to a statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the successful operation marks a significant blow to the criminal gang believed to be responsible for several high-profile kidnappings and killings in the region.

Police traced the kidnappers’ camp to Ikot Ukpon village, a remote area near the Abia-Akwa Ibom border, following weeks of investigation. The suspects are said to have operated from this base, using the location’s isolation to evade arrest.

“Acting on credible intelligence, our operatives raided the kidnappers’ hideout in Ikot Ukpon village,” DSP Chinaka said. “After successfully dislodging the gang, the team was ambushed by other armed members of the group who tried to rescue their fellow criminals.”

The attempted rescue led to a fierce gun battle between the fleeing gang members and the police officers. During the shootout, six of the suspects who had been arrested tried to escape but were fatally wounded in the process.

“They sustained gunshot injuries while trying to flee and died on the way to the hospital,” DSP Chinaka added.

Two police officers also sustained gunshot injuries during the operation. They are currently receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

In the aftermath of the raid, the police recovered a significant cache of weapons and other items believed to have been used by the gang. These include two AK-47 rifles, 57 rounds of ammunition, one locally-made pistol, six magazines, and a large bag filled with charms suspected to be used for protection or spiritual fortification by the criminals.

Police also confirmed that several members of the gang fled the scene with bullet wounds. A joint operation with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has been launched to comb the surrounding areas and ensure that no suspect escapes justice.

“We are working closely with our counterparts in Akwa Ibom State to track down and arrest the remaining members of this gang,” DSP Chinaka assured. “We urge members of the public, especially those in the area, to report anyone with suspicious injuries or behaviour.”

This crackdown follows months of growing concern over the rising cases of kidnapping and violent crime in Abia and neighbouring states. The neutralised gang is suspected to be behind the kidnapping of the Director of Sobaz Oil and Gas, who was abducted on March 4, 2025, along the Azumini Road in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.

That kidnapping incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals — ASP Tanko Naptip of the Rivers State Command and Anayo Ukwu, who were both caught in the crossfire. The killing of the Managing Director of Dozzman Filling Station, Mr Chiedozie Confidence Chijioke, was also linked to the same gang.

“These criminals had been terrorising residents and businesspeople in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. We are determined to ensure they face the full wrath of the law,” DSP Chinaka stated.

The Abia Police Command has called on residents to remain vigilant and support the police by reporting any suspicious activity in their communities. They also advised hospitals and traditional healers to report anyone seeking treatment for bullet wounds.

The Command reassured citizens that efforts are being doubled to rid the state of violent criminals. CP Danladi Isa also commended the bravery of the officers involved and wished the injured personnel a speedy recovery.
