PDP Confirms Damagum as National Chairman

    Share

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party. This decision was reached during the party’s 102nd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held on Monday in Abuja.

Damagum, who has been serving as the acting National Chairman since March 2023, now takes full charge of the PDP leadership. His appointment marks a significant step for the party as it works to rebuild its strength and unity ahead of future elections.

The confirmation followed months of internal consultations and leadership discussions within the PDP, which has been Nigeria’s main opposition party since it lost power at the federal level in 2015. Damagum stepped into the acting role after the suspension of former chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, following a court order.

Party leaders say Damagum’s performance as acting chairman helped to stabilize the PDP in a challenging political environment. Under his leadership, the party managed several key events, including the 2023 general elections, and has been working to resolve internal disputes across different states.

Speaking at the NEC meeting, top party members expressed confidence in Damagum’s ability to lead the party into a new chapter. “We believe that under his leadership, the PDP will regain its strength and position as the true voice of the people,” one NEC member said.

Damagum’s confirmation comes at a time when the PDP is dealing with internal divisions and trying to regain its footing following its loss in the 2023 presidential election, where its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, came second to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Observers say the party’s leadership question needed to be settled quickly to allow for better planning and unity. Many see Damagum as a neutral figure who is capable of bridging the gaps between various factions in the party.

The 102nd NEC meeting also addressed other issues affecting the party, including preparations for upcoming off-cycle elections in some states, and plans to reform the party’s internal structures.

With this appointment, PDP members and supporters will be watching closely to see how Damagum leads the party forward, especially in terms of rebuilding public trust and preparing for the 2027 general elections.

Ambassador Damagum hails from Yobe State in the North-East region of Nigeria. He has a long history in politics and public service, and has served the PDP in various capacities over the years.

His confirmation as the substantive chairman signals a new phase for the PDP, as it continues efforts to remain a strong opposition voice and a major player in Nigeria’s democratic process.
