2027: Peter Obi Stands a Chance of PDP Presidential Ticket – Senator Abba Moro

    Share

The Senate Minority Leader and senator representing Benue South, Abba Moro, has said that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, could secure the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential ticket for the 2027 elections—if he returns to the party.

Senator Moro made the statement during an interview on Politics Today, a political programme aired on Channels Television on Tuesday. He explained that politics is unpredictable and that nothing should be ruled out.

“In politics, two plus two is not always four,” he said. “These are matters of interest. And when it comes to the existential interest of a community or geopolitical zone, anything is possible.”

The senator, who holds a strategic leadership role within the PDP as its Minority Leader in the Senate, revealed that although the party has not formally approached Peter Obi, some individuals within the party are already holding informal talks with him.

“We are yet to speak to Peter Obi as a party,” Moro said. “But some people are already talking to him. And yes, he stands a chance of getting the PDP ticket if he returns.”

Moro added that such conversations are based on the belief that Obi, if he returns and gains popular support within the PDP, could become the party’s presidential flagbearer. He said this would boost the PDP’s chances in the 2027 general elections.

“If Peter Obi comes back and is the most favoured and supported candidate, and becomes the candidate, the PDP will definitely make an impact in 2027,” Moro stated.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections. Before joining the Labour Party, Obi was a member of the PDP and had even been screened as a presidential aspirant before he pulled out and joined Labour. His campaign in 2023 gained significant support, particularly from the youth and middle-class voters, many of whom rallied under the “Obidient” movement.

Although Obi came third in the 2023 presidential election behind Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, his performance, especially in urban centres and some parts of southern Nigeria, surprised many political observers and showed his growing popularity.

The idea of his possible return to the PDP has sparked conversations in political circles. Analysts say that his return could help bridge divisions within the opposition and create a stronger front against the ruling APC in the next general elections.

However, there are also questions about how such a move would affect the Labour Party, which gained national relevance largely due to Peter Obi’s candidacy. His departure could leave the party weakened ahead of 2027.

Moro’s remarks come amid growing internal discussions within the PDP on how to reposition itself after two back-to-back presidential defeats in 2019 and 2023. Many party leaders are said to be considering new alliances, possible mergers, or a broader coalition to challenge the APC in future elections.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has not made any public statement regarding his political plans for 2027. Since the end of the 2023 elections, he has continued to engage in national discourse, focusing on governance, accountability, and youth inclusion in politics. He remains a strong voice in Nigeria’s political space.

Moro’s comments suggest that the PDP is keeping its doors open to strategic figures like Obi who have demonstrated the capacity to mobilise large followings and influence election outcomes. Whether Obi will take up the offer or stay with the Labour Party remains to be seen.
