Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has called for calm and peaceful dialogue in response to the renewed conflict between the Itsekiri and Urhobo communities in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

In a personally signed statement released on Tuesday, the senator expressed concern over the recent outbreak of violence and tension between the two ethnic groups, urging restraint, tolerance, and the immediate de-escalation of hostilities.

“At this critical time, I appeal to all parties to exercise restraint and shun any acts of violence,” Dafinone said. “I further call on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly in de-escalating the situation and ensuring the safety of all communities.”

Senator Dafinone highlighted that the Urhobo and Itsekiri peoples have lived side by side for decades, sharing cultural, social, and economic relationships that should not be undermined by avoidable disagreements.

“These two great ethnic groups have coexisted as neighbours for generations,” he noted. “The bonds they share must not be broken by conflict or division. Instead, we must work together to deepen unity and mutual respect.”

The renewed clashes, which have stirred concern across Delta State, reportedly involve disputes over community rights and territorial claims in the Warri South area. Though the exact cause of the current crisis remains unclear, tensions have been rising in recent weeks, culminating in attacks and growing unease.

Senator Dafinone strongly condemned the recent attack on the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU) House in Okere-Urhobo, which reportedly left several youths injured.

He described the attack as “deeply regrettable” and a direct insult to the collective identity of the Urhobo people.

“The UPU represents the heritage and identity of the Urhobo people worldwide. An attack on the UPU is, by extension, an attack on the entire Urhobo Nation,” he stated. “I urge the authorities to investigate these incidents thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”

Dafinone also urged security agencies to maintain neutrality and fairness in addressing the crisis, warning that any perception of bias could worsen the situation.

“Our security forces must be fair and proactive in preventing violence and ensuring the safety of all affected communities,” he said. “Peace can only be built through dialogue, reconciliation, and trust.”

The senator called on traditional rulers, elders, youth leaders, and political stakeholders from both ethnic groups to engage in constructive discussions to restore peace and unity.

“I urge all community leaders to rise above emotions and political differences to promote peaceful coexistence,” he said. “The voices of wisdom in our communities must be louder than the drums of conflict.”

As part of long-term solutions, Senator Dafinone urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conclude the Supreme Court-ordered delineation of electoral boundaries in the Warri Federal Constituency.

The delineation exercise, which has been pending for years, is believed to be at the heart of longstanding political and territorial grievances between the Itsekiri and Urhobo groups.

Dafinone believes that completing the exercise could help resolve major flashpoints in the crisis by ensuring equitable political representation and reducing competition over shared constituencies.

“The INEC delineation will go a long way in addressing some of the root causes of this dispute,” he said. “We must commit ourselves to long-term peace, not just temporary calm.”

In his final remarks, Senator Dafinone appealed to all Deltans to avoid spreading misinformation or promoting ethnic division. He reminded residents of the strength in diversity and the power of unity.

“Together, we can sustain the bonds of brotherhood and build a future anchored on justice and harmony,” he concluded.
