    Share

In a daring night assault, bandits on motorcycles attacked a military base in Babanna, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. However, troops stationed at the base successfully repelled the attack, killing scores of the assailants and maintaining control of the area.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, when a group of armed bandits launched a surprise raid on the military facility. According to security sources, the bandits stormed the base with the aim of overwhelming the soldiers and causing significant damage or looting military assets.

Upon the bandits’ arrival, the soldiers quickly responded, engaging the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire. The firepower and discipline of the military personnel overwhelmed the bandits, resulting in many casualties among the attackers.

A security source, who requested anonymity, said, “During the exchange of gunfire, scores of the bandits were neutralised. Though they managed to evacuate almost all their dead, they left one body behind. This shows the scale of the defeat they suffered.”

Despite the intense assault, the troops maintained their position and prevented the bandits from penetrating the base’s defenses. The soldiers have since been placed on high alert to guard against any follow-up attacks or reprisals.

The forests and remote rural areas of Borgu LGA and other parts of Niger State have become hotspots for bandit activities. The criminals use motorcycles to swiftly move across difficult terrain, launching raids on villages, farms, and even military outposts.

The persistent bandit attacks have caused fear and displacement among residents, disrupting farming activities and economic life. Many villagers have fled to safer towns, leaving behind farmlands and homes.

In response, the military presence in vulnerable areas has increased to reassure citizens and protect key infrastructure. The successful defense of the Babanna military base is seen as a major victory in the ongoing fight against banditry.

Community leaders and residents have expressed relief and optimism following the repelled attack, urging security agencies to sustain their efforts.

Government officials have also called for socio-economic development programs in affected communities to address the root causes of banditry, such as poverty and unemployment.
