Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has assigned portfolios to the newly inaugurated commissioners, officially setting up his full executive council more than a year after taking office. The announcement marks a key step in the administration’s effort to fast-track development across key sectors of the state.
In a statement released by the state government, 18 commissioners received their official assignments. The appointments cover major sectors such as health, education, agriculture, finance, justice, and digital economy, among others.
Dr Paul Ejeh Ogwuche will oversee the Ministry of Health and Human Services, a critical post as the state grapples with healthcare challenges, especially in rural areas. Dr Ortese Yanmar has been assigned to the Ministry of Co-operatives and Rural Development, reflecting the government’s focus on community-based economic initiatives.
In the agricultural sector, which remains the backbone of Benue’s economy, Dr Benjamin Ashaver has been named Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Management. He is expected to drive food security and improve the productivity of local farmers.
Dr Fredrick Ikyaan will head the Ministry of Lands, a ministry often involved in land dispute resolution and urban planning. Hon. Michael Oglegba, a known financial expert, has been given the Ministry of Finance, where he will be responsible for managing the state’s resources and revenue generation.
Youth empowerment appears to be a top priority for the Alia administration, with Tiza Isaac Imojime appointed to lead the Ministry of Youth Creativity and Development. This ministry is expected to focus on job creation, youth training, and digital skills acquisition.
Hon. Alumo Orpin has been assigned to Industry, Trade and Investment, while Hon. Ugwu Odoh will head the Ministry of Water Resources, a vital area given the state’s need for improved access to clean water.
Hon. Kunde Aondowase is now the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, where he is expected to coordinate responses to the growing number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state. Hon. Kwaghgba Amande will take charge of the Ministry of ICT and Digital Economy.
In the infrastructure and energy sectors, Hon. Joseph Ter Jir has been named Commissioner for Transportation, Power and Energy. Meanwhile, Hon. James Dwem will lead the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Legal and justice matters will be overseen by Dr Ornguga Yangien, who has been appointed Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. Hon. Theresa Odachi Ikwue is the new Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, and Dr Adamu Margaret Ijaguwa will lead the Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management.
The government’s communication arm will be run by Dr Peter Oboh Egbodo, Commissioner for Information. Hon. Dennis Iyaighgba will lead the newly established Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, highlighting the state’s interest in exploring economic opportunities in inland waterways and aquatic resources.
Governor Alia urged the commissioners to justify the trust placed in them by delivering results that will improve the lives of Benue people. The full formation of the executive council is expected to bring more direction and speed to the government’s development agenda.
