The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the final number of registered voters ahead of the upcoming Anambra State governorship election. According to the Commission, a total of 2,802,790 voters are now on the official register for the election.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Thursday after INEC’s weekly meeting in Abuja. The statement, signed by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, provided detailed updates on the outcome of the recently concluded voter registration exercise in Anambra.
INEC said the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) was successfully conducted across all 326 Wards in the state from July 8 to 20, 2025. During that period, a total of 168,187 new voters completed their registration.
However, the Commission explained that after a careful review using its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), 27,817 entries were found to be invalid due to double or multiple registrations. These were immediately removed from the voter list, as required by the Electoral Act 2022.
“Consequently, the number of valid new registrants stands at 140,370,” Olumekun said. “In addition, we received 5,983 valid applications for voter transfer into Anambra State. This brings the total number of new voters added to the register to 146,353.”
Before this latest exercise, Anambra State had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the additional valid registrations and transfers, the total number of voters now stands at 2,802,790.
INEC also broke down the distribution of voters across the state’s 21 local government areas. According to the data:
Idemili North has the highest number of registered voters with 246,318 (8.79%)
Followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73%)
And Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71%)
The lowest numbers were recorded in Dunukofia with 83,580 (2.98%)
And Anambra West with 71,332 (2.55%)
The Commission assured voters that their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would be ready for collection before the election. “We are making arrangements to ensure that all new registrants and those who applied for transfers receive their PVCs on time,” Olumekun added.
As part of its legal responsibilities, INEC had earlier displayed the list of new registrants in all the wards across the state for claims and objections, allowing citizens to verify their details or report any irregularities.
The Commission has continued to urge citizens to check their registration status and collect their PVCs ahead of the election. Voters are also encouraged to report any suspicious entries or issues related to voter registration.
The upcoming Anambra governorship election, scheduled for later this year, is expected to be highly competitive, with several parties preparing to field strong candidates. INEC has reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election, promising that all logistics and preparations will be in place.
INEC’s clean-up of the voter register is part of a broader effort to ensure electoral integrity and eliminate fraud. Since the adoption of technology such as ABIS and BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System), the Commission has been able to reduce incidents of double registration, underage voting, and vote manipulation.
