A Colombian footballer, Javier Bolivar, has come under heavy criticism after slapping a female referee, Vanessa Ceballos, during a midweek match between Real Alianza and Deportivo Quique.
The shocking incident happened in the 66th minute of the game. Bolivar, who had already been substituted and was off the pitch, was shown a red card by referee Ceballos for unsportsmanlike conduct.
However, just as she was raising the card, Bolivar stormed onto the pitch and struck her across the face with his right hand while turning away. The unexpected blow caused chaos on the field.
In response, the visibly shocked and angered referee attempted to kick Bolivar before being restrained by other players. A goalkeeper rushed in and physically pushed Bolivar away from the referee as emotions ran high on both sides.
The entire altercation was caught on camera, and video footage quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread condemnation from fans, officials, and international observers.
Football lovers across the world, especially women’s football advocates, called for strict disciplinary action against Bolivar, who many say not only assaulted an official but also disrespected the game and set a dangerous example.
The Colombian Football Federation has yet to issue an official statement, but local sports bodies have reportedly opened investigations into the incident.
Following the intense backlash, Bolivar took to Instagram to issue a public apology, describing his actions as “disrespectful and inappropriate.”
In the statement, Bolivar denied intentionally slapping the referee. He claimed that he was trying to grab the whistle from her mouth, not assault her.
“I want to make it absolutely clear that at no time was there any physical aggression toward the referee,” he wrote. “However, I understand that my gesture was offensive and portrayed her as contrary to the values of football and respect. Therefore, I humbly apologize to her, her family, the women, and everyone who was affected by what happened.”
He further added:
“I firmly reject any form of violence, especially against women. Women deserve all our respect, care, and admiration. My commitment is to work on my personal and athletic growth so as to never again repeat an act that violates anyone’s dignity.”
Despite the apology, many fans and commentators believe the player should face a long-term ban and be made to undergo counselling or disciplinary training.
This incident has once again raised concerns about player conduct, violence in sports, and the protection of female officials, especially as women continue to take more visible roles in male-dominated leagues.
