Woman Curses Lover With River Deity Over Alleged Betrayal

A young Ghanaian woman has sparked controversy and intense debate online after a video of her invoking a river deity to curse her partner over alleged betrayal went viral on social media.

In the dramatic video, which has been widely shared on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter), the unidentified woman is seen at a riverside, emotionally pouring out her pain and calling on the river gods to punish her partner.

According to her, the two had entered a covenant never to part ways, especially after she stood by him during his struggles and difficult moments. She accused him of turning his back on her after becoming successful.

“If he abandons me for another woman after becoming successful, may the gods deal with him,” she declared in the video.

The woman claimed she made sacrifices, both emotional and financial, to support the man when he had nothing. Now that he has risen in life, she says he is trying to leave her for another woman.

Beyond the spiritual curse, she also demanded that the man pay her GHS100,000 (about ₦6.5 million) as compensation for the years she spent with him.

“Let him refund my money and effort. He must pay me 100,000 cedis before he can go and marry another woman. If not, let the gods follow him wherever he goes,” she said.

The video has generated mixed reactions online. Some social media users condemned the act, saying invoking spiritual forces into personal matters like relationships was wrong and could lead to unnecessary fear and trauma.

However, many others sympathised with the woman, saying her pain reflects the experience of countless women who support their partners through tough times, only to be left behind when the man achieves success.

“It’s painful. She probably gave him her youth, time, and money. And now he wants to dump her? Let the gods judge,” a user wrote on Facebook.

Others, however, urged caution, warning against making covenants in relationships, especially when there is no legal or spiritual binding like marriage.

The incident has also reignited conversations about the role of traditional beliefs in modern-day relationships. In many African cultures, river gods and other spiritual deities are still believed to hold power over justice, especially in matters of betrayal and broken promises.

Meanwhile, the man at the centre of the controversy has not been identified or publicly responded to the video. As the clip continues to trend, the debate around love, loyalty, betrayal, and justice—both spiritual and emotional shows no signs of fading soon.
