Ugarte ‘Does Absolutely Nothing’ – Burley Blasts £50m Midfielder

Former Chelsea midfielder and football pundit, Craig Burley, has delivered a scathing assessment of Manchester United’s Uruguayan midfielder, Manuel Ugarte, calling him a “wet blanket” who contributes “absolutely nothing” to the team.

Burley made the remarks during a segment on ESPN, expressing disbelief at Ugarte’s performances since joining Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer of 2024. The deal, reportedly worth around £50 million, has come under scrutiny following a string of underwhelming displays by the 23-year-old midfielder.

“Manuel Ugarte is just absolutely nothing. He’s like a wet blanket. Put him in with the kids and even the kids would be going, ‘who the hell is this guy?’ Seriously,” Burley said bluntly.

Ugarte was among several high-profile signings made during former manager Erik ten Hag’s time in charge. Alongside players like Antony and Joshua Zirkzee, he was brought in to strengthen the squad. However, most of these signings failed to make a significant impact, contributing to United’s struggles under Ten Hag’s leadership.

Despite making over 45 appearances last season, Ugarte has failed to convince fans and analysts alike that he is fit to wear the Manchester United jersey. Many believe his performances lack the energy, vision, and dominance expected from a central midfielder at a club with United’s history and ambition.

The criticism from Burley echoes earlier remarks from former United captain and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, who also questioned Ugarte’s suitability for the team. Neville was quoted saying the midfielder is “not a Manchester United player.”

So far this Premier League season, Ugarte has made two brief substitute appearances and was left on the bench in the game against Burnley, raising more questions about his role in the current squad.

Manchester United, now under new management following Ten Hag’s departure, are reportedly evaluating several underperforming players, with fans hoping for major improvements or changes before the January transfer window.
