NCDC Issues Public Alert Over Suspected Haemorrhagic Fever in Abuja

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public health alert following the detection of two suspected cases of viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) in Abuja.

In a public advisory released on Friday, the NCDC confirmed that both cases have tested negative for Ebola and Marburg viruses, two of the deadliest viral haemorrhagic fevers. However, further tests are ongoing to check for other common VHFs such as Lassa fever and Dengue fever.

According to the agency, the early detection was made possible thanks to a vigilant traveller who reported symptoms, and the quick response of frontline health workers, which helped reduce any potential risk to the public.

The NCDC urged members of the public to remain calm but vigilant, while also stressing the importance of hygiene and early medical attention.

In its statement, the agency advised Nigerians to seek medical care immediately if they feel unwell, especially after travelling, and to avoid contact with anyone showing signs such as unexplained fever, bleeding, vomiting, or diarrhoea.

The NCDC also warned against spreading false information or rumours, saying all updates should come from official channels.

“Thanks to early reporting and the swift action of health workers, the risk to the public was minimised,” the statement read.

The agency reminded Nigerians of the following preventive measures:

Wash hands regularly with soap and water

    Practise good personal hygiene

Avoid close contact with people showing symptoms

Report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility

Anyone experiencing unusual symptoms or who suspects they may have come in contact with a potential case is urged to call the NCDC toll-free number 6232 for guidance.

The NCDC also encouraged Nigerians to follow @NCDCgov on social media for verified updates and official announcements.

While Abuja has not recorded any confirmed outbreak, the agency highlighted that public awareness and cooperation are key to preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
