A 57-year-old saw-miller, Fatai Quadri, has been remanded in prison by a Magistrate Court in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, after a video of him physically assaulting his wife went viral on social media.
The court, presided over by Magistrate P. O. Odunsi, gave the remand order on Monday, September 23, directing that Quadri be kept at the Ijebu Ode Correctional Centre until October 17, when his bail application will be considered.
Quadri was arraigned on multiple charges including assault, domestic violence, and breach of public peace, according to court documents made available during the hearing.
The disturbing video, which surfaced online last week, showed Quadri repeatedly hitting his 50-year-old wife, Rukayat Quadri, at their residence in Illese-Ijebu, on September 15, 2025. The attack reportedly left the victim with visible injuries, prompting widespread public outrage and calls for justice.
Following the video’s circulation, the Ogun State Police Command quickly confirmed Quadri’s arrest. He was apprehended by officers attached to the Igbeba Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu Ode.
Speaking on the incident, the command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, explained that preliminary investigations revealed the violence stemmed from a marital dispute linked to infidelity allegations.
According to the police, Fatai Quadri had allegedly transferred ownership of a 10-room apartment, which he co-owned with his wife, to another woman. This act reportedly triggered a heated argument between the couple, which later turned violent.
“The matter escalated beyond control and led to physical assault, which was unfortunately captured on video,” Odutola said in a statement released on Saturday.
She added that the victim is currently receiving medical treatment, while the suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from various quarters, including the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. Reacting to the case, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Adijat Adeleye, described the assault as criminal and unacceptable.
“The government is not happy with such criminal acts. Our position has always been zero tolerance to gender-based violence. Definitely, the suspect will account for his misdeeds. Justice will be served, I assure the residents of the state,” she said.
Adeleye further stated that her ministry is closely monitoring the case to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done. She urged members of the public, especially women, to report domestic violence cases early and seek help from appropriate authorities.
“This is a reminder that domestic abuse, whether physical or emotional, is a serious offence. We encourage victims to speak up. Help is available,” she added.
Meanwhile, rights groups and civil society organisations have also weighed in, calling for swift prosecution and stiffer penalties for offenders to serve as a deterrent.
The incident adds to the growing list of reported domestic violence cases across Nigeria, sparking fresh conversations about the need for more public awareness, legal reforms, and support systems for victims.
