The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the annual Independence Day parade initially planned to celebrate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The decision was officially communicated on Monday through a statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations. According to the statement, the cancellation does not diminish the importance of Nigeria reaching this major milestone.

“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, 1st October,” the statement said. “The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”

The Independence Day parade is a long-standing tradition where the Nigerian military, schools, and various organisations showcase patriotic displays and performances, attended by government officials, foreign diplomats, and invited guests.

This year’s cancellation is unusual but the government did not give specific reasons for the decision. However, the statement expressed regret over any inconvenience the cancellation might cause to Nigerians and all involved parties.
