Former Liverpool defender and football pundit, Jamie Carragher, has strongly advised Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, to step down from his role following what he described as a disastrous spell in charge of the Premier League side.
Carragher made the remarks on Monday Night Football, reacting to United’s poor start to the current season and their disappointing finish last term.
Ruben Amorim, 40, joined Manchester United after a successful spell at Sporting Lisbon, where he gained praise for his exciting style of play and tactical intelligence. However, his time at Old Trafford has failed to meet expectations.
United finished 15th last season under Amorim — one of their worst-ever Premier League campaigns and are currently sitting in 14th place, just above the relegation zone. The club has yet to win back-to-back games this season and most recently lost 3-1 to Brentford, further piling pressure on the Portuguese coach.
“This has been a disaster for Man United and Ruben Amorim,” he said. “What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic, and he looked like the next big thing as a manager. But bringing in a manager with a system like his never suited the traditions of Man United.”
He added that the longer the club delays in making a decision, the worse it may get.
“We’re only waiting for the inevitable. You don’t want to see people lose their jobs, but this has to end as quickly as possible.”
Amorim was initially seen as a fresh start for the Red Devils, but many now believe his approach hasn’t clicked with the players or the club’s traditional attacking style.
