Former senator, author, and public commentator, Shehu Sani, has mocked Nigerians who quickly declare “Nigeria is finished” whenever there is a crisis in the country.
His comment came in reaction to a minor plane accident in the United States. On Tuesday, two airplanes collided while taxiing at LaGuardia Airport in New York, injuring one person. No fatalities were reported, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Reacting via his official social media account, Shehu Sani wrote:
“Two planes collided while taxiing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport injuring one. If it had happened here, the finishing specialists would have said ‘Nigeria is finished.’”
Although he didn’t mention any names, Sani’s comment is believed to be directed at politicians and citizens—especially online critics—who often paint a hopeless picture of the country in reaction to local mishaps.
The phrase “Nigeria is finished” has become popular in political and social discourse, especially among critics of the government who highlight insecurity, economic hardship, and infrastructural decay.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, is known for his sharp political commentary and frequent use of sarcasm.
His post has since gone viral, sparking mixed reactions online. While some users agreed with him and praised his wit, others said he was downplaying Nigeria’s real and pressing issues.
