Lagos Shuts Lekki Market, Arrests 5 Over Environmental Breaches

The Lagos State Government has indefinitely shut down Itedo Market in Lekki over persistent environmental violations and illegal roadside trading.

The decision was announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday.

According to Wahab, five individuals were arrested during the enforcement operation carried out by the state task force. The commissioner said the closure followed repeated warnings to traders who continued to breach environmental laws despite multiple notices.

“This morning, we took decisive action at Itedo Market, Lekki, which has now been shut down indefinitely due to repeated environmental violations and illegal roadside trading,” Wahab stated. “Five persons have been arrested for flouting state laws.”

To ensure compliance and prevent further illegal trading activities, Wahab revealed that three Black Maria vehicles have been stationed at the market. These will serve as a visible deterrent and help law enforcement maintain order in the area.

“Lagos will not tolerate disregard for environmental regulations or unauthorised street trading,” the commissioner added. “Our commitment to restoring sanity, ensuring public safety, and upholding the rule of law remains unwavering.”

Itedo Market, located in the Lekki area of Lagos, is a popular trading hub. However, in recent months, the market has drawn attention from environmental agencies due to issues such as indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drainages, and illegal expansion onto roadsides.

The latest clampdown is part of a broader effort by the Lagos State Government to enforce environmental laws across major markets, highways, and public spaces. Authorities say the goal is to improve sanitation, reduce traffic congestion, and protect public health.

Residents and business owners in the area have been advised to comply with regulations to avoid similar sanctions.

The state government has repeatedly warned that markets found violating sanitation rules or encouraging street trading will face closure, arrest of offenders, and possible prosecution.

Officials also noted that regular enforcement exercises will continue across all local government areas as part of Lagos’ Clean and Green initiative.
