The Nigeria Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on Wednesday raided two offices of the Osun Amotekun Corps, arresting 25 of its personnel in connection with the killing of seven persons in Akinlalu, Ife North Local Government Area, on September 30, 2025.
According to sources, the raids were carried out simultaneously at the Amotekun offices in Ife Central Local Government Area and the Head Office Annexe in Osogbo, the state capital. The operations were led by police operatives from Abuja under the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
“In Osogbo, they arrested twenty Amotekun personnel on duty, and in Ife Central Local Government Area, they arrested five,” the source confirmed.
The action follows the gruesome killing of seven residents of Akinlalu, which has thrown the community into mourning and raised serious questions about security in the state.
In an official statement, Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, disclosed that five suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the killings. He further stated that investigations carried out by the police indicated that the attackers were members of the Amotekun Corps.
“Investigation carried out by the Police revealed that the attackers are members of the Amotekun Corps,” the statement, issued by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, read.
“Individuals were mentioned to have masterminded the attack, and victims and eyewitnesses have said they can identify the attackers if seen. Efforts are ongoing to arrest other suspects still at large.”
The Commissioner also revealed that the Commander of the Amotekun Corps in Osun, Isaac Omoyele, was invited by the police for questioning regarding his role in the attack but refused to honour the invitation. Attempts to reach him on the phone were unsuccessful, as his line was reportedly switched off.
The police said Omoyele later resurfaced online, claiming he was attacked by unknown masked gunmen, a statement police say was false and aimed at misleading the public.
“Only for him to come on social media on 6th October 2025 and put up a claim of being attacked by unknown armed men wearing masks, which preliminary enquiry reveals to be a figment of his own imagination aimed at concealing the truth and derailing the course of justice for the victims,” the statement added.
The police have assured residents that the Force remains committed to peace and justice in the state. The Inspector-General has directed the IRT-FID, an elite investigative arm of the police, to take over the case and ensure thorough investigation.
The Akinlalu killings mark one of the most serious security breaches in the state in recent times, and the involvement of a state-backed security outfit like Amotekun has sparked debates about the oversight and accountability of regional security networks.
