Suspected Herdsmen Sighted Near Campus, Osun Poly Raises Alarm

The management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has raised an alarm over a potential security threat in the area and has advised all students and staff to stay indoors from 9:00 p.m. daily until further notice.

The warning was issued in an internal memo signed by the Registrar, R. I. Adebayo, on behalf of the Polytechnic’s management. The memo, dated October 7, 2027, was released on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the alert followed intelligence reports indicating the suspected presence of Fulani herdsmen around Iree and its surrounding areas. These individuals, the report said, may pose a threat to the safety of the Polytechnic community.

“The entire Polytechnic Community, especially students, are hereby informed to stay indoors anytime from 9:00 p.m. in Iree and its environs,” the memo read.

“This alertness and security awareness arose based on intelligence gathering from the community on the possible presence of some Fulani herdsmen which may likely pose possible security threat that is likely to endanger your movement.”

The management urged students to avoid unnecessary movement at night and remain vigilant at all times. They were also encouraged to report any suspicious persons or activities to the school’s Chief Security Officer.

To ensure prompt response, two dedicated phone numbers were provided for students and staff to call in case of any emergency: 07033166585 and 07034557451.

The Polytechnic’s decision comes amid growing concern over insecurity in parts of Nigeria, including attacks and kidnappings reportedly linked to armed herdsmen in rural and semi-urban areas.

In recent years, several institutions across the country have taken extra security steps to protect students, particularly in locations considered vulnerable.

The Polytechnic said it is working closely with local security agencies and community leaders to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of everyone on campus.

Students have been advised to cooperate fully with security personnel and to remain calm, as the situation is being closely monitored.

For now, all outdoor movement after 9:00 p.m. within Iree and nearby areas should be avoided until the management issues a new directive.
