Head coach of the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr, has said his return to Nigeria is strictly for business, not emotions. Rohr, who previously managed the Super Eagles for five years, will lead Benin against his former team in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match today.

Speaking to journalists in Uyo ahead of the clash, Rohr made it clear that his focus is on securing victory for Benin Republic, who are aiming for their first-ever World Cup qualification.

“I have a lot of friends in Nigeria, even in this team. Some of the players here are ones I brought into the squad,” Rohr said.

“But this is not a moment for emotions or memories. The focus is on a big match, and we’ll all be there to witness it.”

The encounter is set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, and kick-off is scheduled for 5pm.

Rohr was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in 2021 after a mixed spell in charge of the Super Eagles. Now in charge of Benin Republic, the German tactician has rebuilt the Cheetahs into serious contenders in Group C of the African qualifiers.

Benin currently sit top of the group with 17 points from nine matches, putting them in strong contention for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

For many Nigerian fans, Rohr’s return adds a layer of intrigue to what is already a must-win match for the Super Eagles, who are chasing their own qualification hopes after a slow start to the campaign.

As both teams prepare for tonight’s clash, Rohr insists his focus is clear: helping Benin secure a historic qualification, even if it means defeating his former team.
