Sanwo-Olu Unveils Omi Eko Electric Ferry Project

The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is set to officially launch the ambitious Omi Eko Project on October 17, 2025, in a move aimed at transforming water transportation across the state.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), is backed by €410 million in funding through the Global Gateway Initiative, supported by the European Union, French Development Agency, and the European Investment Bank.

The Omi Eko Project will introduce a new fleet of 78 high-capacity electric ferries, with capacities ranging from 50 to 200 passengers. These ferries are expected to ease congestion on Lagos roads by offering a modern and efficient alternative for daily commuting.

In addition to the ferries, the project includes the construction of modern terminals and floating jetties, dredging of waterways covering approximately 140 kilometres across 15 routes, and the introduction of digital ticketing systems to improve boarding efficiency.

According to LASWA, the project will also strengthen water safety and regulation across the state, with improved oversight and capacity building for operators and regulators.

“This is a major leap for Lagos. Omi Eko will not only boost transportation but also reduce carbon emissions and support green development,” a LASWA official said.

The project is scheduled to be delivered in phases over the next six years, and is seen as a critical part of the government’s larger plan to build an integrated, multi-modal transport system for the megacity.

As Lagos grapples with daily traffic congestion, the state government is also considering setting up the Lagos State Railway Corporation to oversee rail development and operations within the state. While details are still under review, insiders say the proposal is aimed at giving Lagos more control over railway infrastructure and services.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has previously highlighted the need to diversify urban transport options, encouraging investment in rail, road, and water systems to reduce pressure on the roads and improve the overall commuting experience for residents.

With over 20 million residents, Lagos is Nigeria’s most populated city and economic hub, making modern, reliable public transport systems crucial to its continued growth and livability.
