One person was killed and three others were injured on Tuesday when suspected Fulani militias attacked Kopmur village in the Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The attack, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. on October 22, began when the gunmen stormed a house where some local farmers had taken shelter after returning from their farmlands and opened fire on them.
According to residents, the assailants arrived suddenly and began shooting indiscriminately, forcing villagers to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Those hit by the bullets have been identified as Dashan Mwanar, 42, who died on the spot, and Sonma Mwanar, 32, Kyenkyes Dakup, 26, and Joy Vumshak, 25, who sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Police officers from the Bokkos Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), were said to have responded swiftly, rescuing the wounded and moving them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Plateau State Police Command, in a statement confirming the incident, said the deceased’s body had been released to his family for burial after they declined an autopsy.
“Our officers responded immediately to the distress call. The injured victims are receiving treatment, and investigations are ongoing to arrest the perpetrators,” a police source told reporters in Jos.
Security operatives have since increased patrols in the affected area to prevent further attacks, while calm has gradually returned to the community.
The latest incident adds to a series of violent attacks that have plagued Bokkos and neighbouring local government areas in Plateau State in recent months. Many farming communities in the central part of the state have been targets of similar assaults linked to long-standing clashes between farmers and herders.
Residents and local leaders have repeatedly called on both the state and federal governments to strengthen security in rural communities and ensure justice for victims of such attacks.
