The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested one Innocent Chukwuma for allegedly using his social media account to call for a military takeover of the Nigerian government.
Security sources said Chukwuma was traced to Oyigbo, near Port Harcourt in Rivers State, where DSS operatives apprehended him following intelligence reports about his online activities.
According to the sources, the suspect had used his X (formerly Twitter) handle, @TheAgroman, to post several messages calling for the military to seize power and suspend democratic governance in Nigeria.
In one of the posts cited by investigators, Chukwuma allegedly wrote:
“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES. That is all we need now. It will happen eventually. Nigerians, the military needs your support now! Only them can save this country. Only the military can reset this country. Support them.”
The posts, which circulated widely on social media, drew public concern and prompted swift action by security agencies. The DSS said such comments could be seen as incitement capable of undermining national security and constitutional order.
Sources within the agency confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and cooperating with investigators. He is expected to face further questioning to determine whether others were involved in spreading similar messages online.
Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999 after several years of military dictatorship. The country’s security agencies have since maintained that any attempt to encourage or support a military takeover is a serious offence under Nigerian law.
In recent years, authorities have warned against online statements or campaigns that could threaten national stability. The DSS has also cautioned citizens to use social media responsibly and avoid spreading messages capable of causing unrest.
