The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has announced Wednesday, November 26, 2025, as the official kick-off date for the 2025/26 football season.
The decision was confirmed at the end of the league’s Annual General Assembly (AGA) held on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to the NWFL board, the new season will be played in a two-group format, with 20 teams competing for the top prize in Nigerian women’s football.
Defending champions Bayelsa Queens will play in Group A, while last season’s runners-up, Nasarawa Amazons, will feature in Group B.
The league organisers also announced the inclusion of four new clubs — Sunshine Queens, Castmog Ladies, Imo Queens, and Ahudiyannem Queens — who will be making their debut appearances in the top-flight women’s league.
The NWFL management said the format is aimed at ensuring a more competitive and entertaining season, while also expanding opportunities for women’s football development across the country.
The NWFL is Nigeria’s top-tier women’s football competition, featuring some of the nation’s best talents and serving as a pathway for players into the Super Falcons, the national women’s team.
Football stakeholders have expressed optimism that the 2025/26 season will bring renewed excitement to women’s football, especially as new teams join the competition.
The full list of fixtures and venues for the new season is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
