A petition demanding accountability from Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has gained significant public attention, gathering more than 34,000 signatures on the online platform Change.org.
The petition, initiated by Sammy West, the brother of actress Regina Daniels, accuses the lawmaker of abuse of power and violating the fundamental rights of his wife and her family.
According to the petition, Senator Nwoko allegedly used his political influence to intimidate Regina Daniels and her relatives. The document, which continues to attract signatures from Nigerians at home and abroad, calls for a full investigation into the allegations to ensure accountability and protect the rule of law.
In the petition, Sammy West alleged that Nwoko’s actions went beyond family disagreements, describing them as a dangerous display of political power and influence. He argued that the senator’s alleged conduct was “not only an affront to Regina Daniels and her family but also a threat to all Nigerians who believe in fairness, justice, and the rule of law.”
“Nwoko’s alleged misconduct is not only an affront to Regina Daniels and her family but also a potential threat to all Nigerians who believe in fairness, justice, and the rule of law. His actions were reportedly more than just personal transgressions; they reflect a misuse of influence that undermines the democratic principles Nigeria relies upon.”
The petition further alleged that the senator had used his position to obstruct legal rights and silence those who challenged him. “Such actions, if left unchecked, could pave the way for an environment where influence overshadows justice. Nigerians should not remain silent onlookers to these grave accusations,” it added.
Since the petition went public, it has sparked heated conversations on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the allegations and urging the authorities to take them seriously.
The controversy began after reports emerged that Regina Daniels, a popular Nollywood actress and one of Ned Nwoko’s wives, had accused the lawmaker of domestic violence. In some viral online posts and leaked statements, she reportedly claimed that she was assaulted at their residence in Delta State.
These claims quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting public reactions and calls for justice.
However, Senator Nwoko has denied all allegations of abuse and power misuse. In a statement released through his media team, the lawmaker dismissed the accusations as false and malicious, saying that Regina’s alleged outburst was influenced by alcohol and drugs.
He urged the public not to be misled by “fabricated stories” and said the matter was being exaggerated to tarnish his image. “I love my family deeply and have always treated them with respect. These stories are false and designed to cause confusion,” he was quoted as saying.
Senator Ned Nwoko is a well-known politician, lawyer, and businessman. He first served as a member of the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003, representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency. In 2023, he was elected as a senator under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Outside politics, Nwoko is also known for his marriage to actress Regina Daniels, which attracted massive media attention in 2019 due to their wide age difference. The couple shares two children.
Over the years, Nwoko has been involved in several high-profile projects, including the Eradication of Malaria in Africa Initiative and investments in real estate and tourism in Delta State. However, he has also faced criticism for his alleged use of political influence in both business and personal matters.
The online petition has divided public opinion. While many Nigerians have praised Sammy West for speaking out and seeking justice for his sister, others have urged caution, noting that the matter involves personal and family issues that may require private resolution rather than public confrontation.
On X (formerly Twitter), users have used the hashtag #HoldNedNwokoAccountable to demand that the Senate and relevant law enforcement agencies investigate the allegations. Some commenters also called for greater protection of women facing abuse, regardless of the social status of the accused.
A social media user wrote: “This is not just about Regina Daniels. If a senator can intimidate someone of her status, imagine what ordinary citizens go through every day.”
Another user countered: “We should not rush to judgment based on social media claims. Both sides deserve to be heard fairly.”
The growing number of signatures on the petition reflects a larger public concern about abuse of power by public officials in Nigeria. Civil society groups have often complained that political influence allows many politicians to evade justice when accused of wrongdoing.
