Operatives of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) have arrested a suspected kidnapper, Ibrahim Mohammed, who was allegedly on his way to deliver a gun to a kidnapping gang operating around the Oluku bypass in Benin City. The arrest adds to growing security concerns along the Benin–Akure road, a route that has recently witnessed repeated cases of abduction, armed robbery, and violent attacks.
The suspect, who is said to be from Borno State, was apprehended during a targeted surveillance operation carried out by the ESSC. According to officials, he was caught while transporting the gun inside a long bag on a motorcycle. The weapon was recovered at the scene.
Confirming the arrest, Deputy Commander of Operations at the ESSC, Richard Balogun, said the suspect and the recovered firearm had already been handed over to the Nigeria Police for profiling and further investigation. He noted that the operation was part of intensified efforts to reduce violent crime in the area.
Balogun explained that the security situation around the Oluku bypass and the Benin–Akure road had become worrisome, prompting security agencies to increase patrols and undercover monitoring.
“There have been incessant kidnapping incidents around the Oluku bypass, Benin–Akure road, and nearby communities,” he said. “Because of these incidents, we strengthened surveillance in the area in addition to our regular motorised patrols.”
Balogun added that the arrest followed credible intelligence received by the ESSC. Earlier in the day, the security team had been tipped off that a man was scheduled to deliver a firearm to members of a kidnapping gang known to operate within the area.
Following the tip-off, ESSC personnel intensified their search and increased visibility along the bypass. A few hours later, the suspect was seen riding on a motorcycle with a long bag believed to be concealing the gun. The operatives immediately intercepted him and conducted a search, which led to the recovery of the weapon.
“The suspect was apprehended and the gun recovered,” Balogun said. “We immediately handed him over to the police so they can carry out a deeper investigation, especially to trace his links with the suspected kidnapping group.”
The Oluku bypass has become one of the most notorious hotspots for kidnapping in Edo State. Over the past few years, several motorists, travellers, and residents have been attacked or abducted along this route. Many of the incidents occur at night or during the early hours of the morning, when the roads are less busy and criminal groups can operate more freely.
The Edo State Government has repeatedly called on security agencies to increase their presence along the route. The government has also supported community policing initiatives and strengthened the ESSC to help tackle crime across the state. Despite these efforts, the activities of kidnapping gangs remain a major challenge.
The Edo State Security Corps, established as part of the state’s community policing strategy, has become a key player in addressing local security problems. The outfit works alongside the Nigeria Police, the Nigerian Army, and other federal security agencies to respond to incidents such as kidnapping, robbery, and cult-related violence.
Balogun explained that the Corps has been conducting more surveillance and patrols in recent months, especially in areas where kidnapping has become frequent. He said the arrest of Ibrahim Mohammed is an example of how timely intelligence and swift action can help prevent planned attacks.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to share information with security agencies. According to him, community cooperation is essential in identifying suspicious movements and stopping criminal activities before they occur.
With the suspect now in police custody, investigations are expected to focus on uncovering the larger network behind the firearm delivery. Security officials believe the suspect may have links to a wider kidnapping syndicate that targets travellers along the Benin–Akure route.
The police are also expected to work on tracking down other members of the gang. Authorities say the arrest could provide important leads that may help prevent future kidnappings and possibly lead to the dismantling of the group.
Residents and travellers in the area have welcomed the arrest, hoping it will reduce attacks and improve safety on the highway. Many have also called for constant patrols and the deployment of additional security personnel to the region.
The arrest of Ibrahim Mohammed highlights the ongoing battle against kidnapping in Edo State. While security challenges remain, authorities say the quick response by the Edo State Security Corps shows that progress is being made.
