Chanchanji, a community in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, is witnessing enhanced security following a series of deadly attacks that left several farmers dead and others displaced. The Nigerian Army, through its 6 Brigade, has intensified operations and engaged directly with local residents to restore confidence and ensure the protection of farmlands.

Brigadier General K. C. Uwa, Commander of 6 Brigade, led an operational and confidence-building visit to Chanchanji on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, amid ongoing clearance operations in the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility. The actions were prompted by credible intelligence indicating the presence of suspected armed herders hiding in surrounding forests. These groups were allegedly responsible for recent violent incidents in the area.

During the visit, Brigadier General Uwa personally oversaw extensive patrols across Chanchanji and neighbouring communities. The military presence focused on major flashpoints and critical access routes to farmlands to prevent further attacks and reassure residents. Speaking to community members and displaced farmers at the Chanchanji Market Square, the Commander emphasized the Army’s commitment to maintaining security and protecting livelihoods.

“We are aware of the fears of our people, and we will ensure that law-abiding citizens can farm safely. Our troops are already on the ground, patrolling the area and monitoring movements of all suspicious individuals,” Brigadier General Uwa said. “We will pursue all criminal elements responsible for these attacks and will not relent until peace is restored.”

The recent attacks have affected several villages in Takum LGA, including Ayu, Dooshima, New Gboko, Adu Tyopaa, Peeki, and Tyojande. Farmers in these areas have been reluctant to return to their farmlands due to the threat of renewed violence, leaving crops vulnerable and livelihoods at risk. The enhanced military presence aims to allow displaced farmers to gradually resume farming activities with confidence.

Brigadier General Uwa directed that troops provide sustained security cover before, during, and after harvesting activities. He also urged residents to assist security forces by providing credible intelligence on suspicious movements, stressing that community cooperation is vital for the success of the operations. “Rumours and misinformation can undermine our efforts. We call on all residents to support the Army by giving accurate information,” he added.

Community leaders and farmers welcomed the military’s proactive engagement, describing Brigadier General Uwa’s visit as timely and confidence-boosting. “It is heartening to see the Brigade Commander personally leading patrols and meeting with our people. This gives us hope and reassures us that we can eventually return to our farms,” said a community elder who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Nigerian Army’s actions in Chanchanji are part of broader security efforts in Taraba State and other parts of the North-East and North-Central regions, where rural communities have increasingly faced attacks by armed herders and bandits. Over the past year, several farming communities have experienced violence that disrupted agricultural activities and forced residents into temporary displacement.

By maintaining a visible presence in Chanchanji and nearby villages, the Army aims to deter criminal elements and encourage displaced farmers to return gradually. This strategy is designed to protect lives, crops, and property while reinforcing law and order in areas previously affected by insecurity.

The operation also includes community engagement, which has proven essential in building confidence between residents and the military. During the visit, troops interacted with villagers, explaining the security measures in place and encouraging cooperation. Many displaced farmers indicated their willingness to return to farming under the protection of the Army, signaling early success for the operation.

Brigadier General Uwa concluded his visit by reiterating the Nigerian Army’s commitment to safeguarding lives and livelihoods across the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility. “We will continue to protect our people, ensure they can live and farm in safety, and uphold the rule of law. Our operations will continue until every criminal threat is neutralized,” he affirmed.

The 6 Brigade’s actions come at a critical time, as communities across Taraba State face rising insecurity from armed herders and bandit groups. While security forces continue to respond to incidents, cooperation from residents remains a key component in preventing further attacks. The Army has called on all community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.

Chanchanji’s recent challenges underscore the urgent need for a combination of military intervention, intelligence gathering, and community collaboration to tackle the persistent threats facing rural farming communities. With the Nigerian Army’s strengthened presence, authorities hope to restore normalcy and allow farmers to return safely to their fields, protecting both their livelihoods and the broader food supply chain in the region.
